Primary Election 2021 Information

New Jersey Primary Election 2021

A note about New Jersey's closed primary elections

New Jersey conducts closed primary elections, which means:

  • Registered voters, and who have chosen to affiliate with the Democratic Party, will receive the Democratic Party primary ballot;
  • Registered voters, and who have chosen to affiliate with the Republican Party, will receive the Republican Party primary ballot.

If you are not affiliated with either party (an unaffiliated voter), you CAN participate in primary elections, HOWEVER,

  • You are required to affiliate yourself with EITHER the Democratic OR the Republican party to have your vote counted;
  • If you choose to vote by mail by submitting an application to do so, you will receive TWO ballots in the mail, one for the Democratic Party and one for the Republican Party.  You must return only one to the Board of Elections.  If you return both, both ballots will be rejected.  Which one of the two party primary ballots you choose to return will dictate the political party to which you are affiliated;
  • If you choose to vote in person, and the poll workers do not have a record of your party affiliation on the poll books, you will be given a provisional ballot to complete.  The provisional ballot has an envelope with an affiliation statement which you must use to affiliate to one of the two political parties.   Once you submit the completed affiliation statement and the paper ballot of the party of your choice, you become affiliated with that party for future primary elections.
  • Your party affiliation will remain in effect for all subsequent primary elections, UNLESS you submit a change of affiliation with the county after you have voted in the primary;
  • Only voters recorded on the poll books as affiliated voters will be allowed to vote on the machines.
